Spent a full day at St Columbas RC Primary school this week, working with year2 , year4 and year6s. The focus for the workshops was using 2Code – we programmed our own bubble game and Newton was attacked by far more than just an apple. In the afternoon we investigated what is a variable? what the job of the variable when coding and then used the Genie task to help us to have more of an understanding when using variables.
Our kit was all packed up ready for a busy day at Harwood Meadows Primary School.
The plan for the day was to have a carousel of computer science activities with year3s in the morning and the year4 class in the afternoon. The activities included:
- Logging on to Purplemash to use 2Code – remember you can use this at home
- Using the BlueBots and iPads – using pauses and repeats in our programming
- Using the free Kodable app on the iPads
- Using the Beebots – to plan where the Beebots starts and finishes, plan the route, input the algorithm – did it work? If not we had to debug!

Sports day @GilnowPrimary so when we went in to deliver computing support for year1s and year2s, of course, we used 2Code in Purplemash and programmed our own snail race.
It was all about Computing in Year 3 at Holy Infants yesterday.
Year 3 learnt lots of tricky technical words such as algorithm, debugging and sprite. Using Purplemash the pupils learnt how to make fish move, make snails race and even create giant or tiny snails at a moment’s notice! Mr Eccles thought he’d seen a six pack of sprites in Asda, but apparently that’s a different thing!
This week we had year3 and year4 from Gilnow Primary School. They had a fun packed of Computer Science they used Lego WeDo to make a hungry crocodile and goal keeper.
In the afternoon year3 started to use Kudo and year4 used scratch and 2Code in Purplemash. Here you can see some of their highlights.

The winning schools will be announced early July and displayed on BoltonSICT Blog site.
Today saw the third class visits from one of local schools – it was the turn of the year 4 class. They had a day packed full of learning – using Lego to build robots and then program them using WeDo software.
They then used ScratchJr to storyboard their own games – the teachers really liked this app and can’t wait to used it back in school. We finally finished the day with a session using 2Code on their schools Purplemash site.

Here are some highlights of our second Hands On Purplemash Day, forty delegates came together to share what’s new, purple mash supporting English collaborative learning and of course 2Code the whole day gave opportunity for lots of hands on !
